WalkthroughThe daemon now detects whether rpm-ostree supports container-storage rebases. Native layered OS updates require this capability. Unsupported or invalid versions use the existing privileged-container update and reboot fallback. ChangesContainer-storage rebase support
Priority: ⬆️ High Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Change: Bug fix Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to On affected nodes, a stalled image pull or deployment can leave the machine-config daemon waiting indefinitely and prevent the update or first boot from completing. Bound these operations before merging. Important Pre-merge checks failedPlease resolve all errors before merging. Addressing warnings is optional. ❌ Failed checks (1 error, 1 warning)
✅ Passed checks (13 passed)
Full details: Container-PrivilegesExplanation The PR adds a new Resolution Do not route the new rpm-ostree compatibility condition through a privileged, host-PID, host-network container. Use a non-privileged update mechanism, or redesign the fallback with only the minimum required capabilities and namespaces. If the privileged fallback is unavoidable, obtain and record an explicit security exception and scope the privileged operation to the smallest possible action.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Restore SELinux enforcement on every fallback exit.
InplaceUpdateViaNewContainer disables SELinux enforcement before podman pull and deploy-from-self. It returns before setenforce 1 when either command fails. These new gates route affected hosts into that unsafe failure path.
pkg/daemon/daemon.go#L1235-L1238: Route firstboot fallback through anInplaceUpdateViaNewContainerimplementation that restores SELinux enforcement on all returns.pkg/daemon/update.go#L2875-L2878: Apply the same restoration guarantee for layered OS update fallback.

I'd say we need a Jira card as a reminder to remove this in our backlog

Verification steps run using IPI on AWS 5.1 After creating the machineset using a 4.13 base image the node could not join to the cluster. It seems that the problem still persists. |
|
Yes, it is a compatibility issue related to RHEL 10 clusters and newly provisioned nodes with RHEL 9 boot images. This issue affects 4.13, 4.14, and 4.15 boot images due to the lack of a composefs blob. Newer RHEL 10 node images assume that the composefs blob is present by default (see rhel-coreos-config) in the selected boot image; otherwise, the ostree-prepare-root service will fail. This is an edge case, as provisioning a new node with such an old RHEL 9 boot image in an updated RHEL 10 cluster is rare. In such cases, a workaround can be used to avoid the problem. RHEL 9 clusters should not be affected by this error. |
|
Once we updated the osImageStream resource to use rhel-9 as the default stream, we were able to create new nodes using old 4.13 image Test "[sig-mco][Suite:openshift/machine-config-operator/longduration][Serial][Disruptive] MCO scale [PolarionID:89097][OTP] Scaleup using 4.13 cloud image" passed. Nodes could be properly created with 4.14 base images too. /verified by @sergiordlr |

OCPBUGS-86768: Nodes created with 4.13 base images cannot join the cluster
2023.3 rpm-ostree version contained in 4.13 and 4.14 is affected by coreos/rpm-ostree#4466.
- What I did
machine-config-daemon: Force container update path using deploy-from-self when rpm-ostree lacks containers-storage rebase fix
- How to verify it
1- Create a AWS cluster
2- Spin up a new node using a 4.13 or 4.14 AMI
3- Check machine journal, the MCD firstboot process should complete and eventually the new machine shall join cluster
